You’re welcome to use the following information to create a flyer to be placed in the church lobby or as an insert in the bulletin in order to promote mental health awareness.
MENTAL HEALTH IS AS IMPORTANT AS PHYSICAL HEALTH
At our church, we believe:
- Mental illness is a REAL health issue that can affect ANYONE
- Regardless of faith strength or spiritual maturity
- Seeking help is WISE and BRAVE, not weak
- Therapy, medication, and counseling are valid treatments
- Our church is a SAFE PLACE to share struggles
- No shame, no judgment, just support
- We support BOTH spiritual AND professional care
- Prayer AND therapy work together
WORDS THAT HELP VS. WORDS THAT HURT
Words that Help:
- “How are you really doing?”
- “I’m here for you”
- “Let me walk with you through this”
- “What do you need right now?”
Words that Hurt:
- “Just pray more about it”
- “You need more faith”
- “It’s strictly a spiritual problem”
- “Other people have it worse”
IF SOMEONE DISCLOSES A MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLE
- Listen without interrupting
- Ask: “How can I support you?”
- Don’t offer quick fixes
- Respect their treatment choices
- Follow up in a few days
