Fascinating First Teaching Trip to Mexico

Daniel L. Sonnenberg, Global Instructor with Timothy Two Project International in Latin America and the Caribbean

MEXICO. I recently traveled for the first time to the mountainous region of the southwestern State of Guerrero, Mexico. My purpose was to teach Timothy Two’s Workshop 1, “Knowing God: His Divine Attributes” to a group of local pastors and ministry leaders.

THE PARTICIPANTS

(Above) The participants of the workshop included local church pastors and ministry leaders from as far as 3 hours away.

THE TOWN: HUERTO DE VERDE RICO

(Above) Although Guerrero is the 2nd poorest state in Mexico, the primary road running through the heart of Huerto de Verde Rico (translated Rich Green Garden), with a population of approximately 100 residents, and where our workshop was held, is currently undergoing a major infrastructure upgrade.

(Above) Roadside curbs are being constructed…

(Above) …the entire road is being paved…

(Above) …and underground water lines are being run to homes.

THE WORKSHOP

(Above) Our workshop was held in a classroom of the local Presbyterian Church which is a member of the National Presbyterian Church in Mexico.

We spent the better part of three days examining the Scriptures and discussing the application questions and related issues using a variety of interactive learning methods:

Lesson “God is True” – discussing Bible interpretation (video)

(Above) …in the large group…

(Above) …in small groups…

(Above) …one on one…

(Above) …using interviews…

(Above) …illustrating on the white board…

(Above) …composing and singing songs based on the the Lesson “God is Holy”… (videos)

(Above) …using panel discussions, debate, drama, sermon outlines, case studies, and more.

(Above) And each day we shared meals together…

(Above) …prepared on traditional wood-fired brick cook stoves and lovingly served by a team of ladies from the host church.

THE WORKSHOP LEADERSHIP

I am especially thankful for the excellent coordination and leadership from:

(Above) …our Workshop Coordinator, Pastor Gedeón Cortés González (left), our Interpreter, Pastor Jonathan Monterrey (right), and his wife, Sol (center)…

(Above) …and our Host Pastor, Eduardo Nájera (3rd from right), with his parents (far left), wife Carmen and their daughter (to Eduardo’s right and left), his brother Eliseo (far right), and sister Bani with her young daughter (center left).

OTHER PEOPLE WE MET

THE HOST CHURCH SANCTUARY

THE SCENERY IN CENTRAL MEXICO

A few scenes viewed on our 5-6 hour drive from the Mexico City area to Huerto de Verde Rico and the return trip:

(Above) …gorgeous mountains and grazing horses…

(Above) …fresh fruit stands and wild cactus…

(Above) …and the colonial-style silver-mining town of Taxco.

“…what you heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”
